One full year after the genocide on Gaza began, MP Mona Fortier (Ottawa-Vanier-Gloucester) decided she could stand with Pro-Israel supporters on the Hill and say “Israel has the right to exist and defend itself.”. But last week MP Fortier could NOT stand with Pro-Palestine supporters and honour and remember the murdered children of Gaza by saying their names aloud. She could rise to her feet in a standing ovation for Charlie Kirk, but could not stand with people from across the country to Say Their Names. She was among the first to use her boss’s recognition of Palestine as cover for her unwillingness to support real action against Israel. Canada’s recognition of Palestine resembled a ransom note more that a true commitment to supporting self-governance for the Palestinian people. And Mona was quick to duck behind the announcement and hope nobody would notice her complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. That if there was no action, Canada would be recognizing a graveyard that we had created. MP Fortier and her party should be ashamed of their lack of action to end the genocide on Gaza, but not even to be able to remember the children of Gaza, is beyond contempt. Canadians should be offended. Salma Zahid, Sameer Zuberi and Sean Casey have demonstrated the very, very least of what we should expect of our governing MPs.
