Shameful MP of the Day - October 2

Melissa Lantsman has been among the worst of a party full of feckless politicians in her response to the genocide in Gaza.  As the co-deputy leader of the Conservative party she has not only supported the bombing of hospitals she has labelled anybody who suggests that bombing hospitals is a crime as “appalling”.

Lantsman, of course, opposed Canada’s recognition of Palestinian statehood calling it “a betrayal of Canadian values and a betrayal of the Canadian people.”  It would be hard to find anybody who understands less about Canadian values than this MP.  She knows what the millionaire donors in her Thornhill riding want.

Melissa Lantsman, wrote in a recent social media post that Carney’s recognition “vindicated” hostage-taking and handed victory to the “violent mobs who block streets, vandalize businesses, target synagogues, and even shoot up schools.  She had an opportunity to join peaceful Canadians from across the country to Say Their Names and chose not to.

Lantsman travelled to Israel in November 2023 to support and provide cover for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.  Over the past two years Lastman met regularly (8 times) with lobbyists from organizations who support Israel’s genocidal policies in Gaza such as The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs, the Azrieli Foundation and B’Nai Brith…when she wasn’t meeting with lobbyists from banks (21 times) and oil companies (10 times).

Even now as every humanitarian organization in the world recognizes that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide, Lastman continues to talk about Israel’s ‘right to self-defense’.  She has denounced every concern raised about Israel’s slaughter in Gaza as antisemitic.  Peaceful protesters are characterized as a “Hamas-supporting mob”. 

Peaceful protest outside Mount Sinai hospital in Toronto was met with this diatribe - “The mobs will not silence my voice against the genocidal, homicidal, sadistic death cult of Hamas who killed 1,200 Israelis and took hostage hundreds more. It is Hamas whose leadership consistently calls for the killing of Jews resulting in horrific antisemitism has been allowed to flourish in Justin Trudeau’s Canada with a deafening silence from every leader in his cowardly government.”

As if Lastman’s support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza is some courageous act of resistance .  Resistance against who? Canadian healthcare workers who tape 81/2 x 11” sheets of paper on the windows and doors of her offices?

 Here is a revealing quote from Lantsman “My parents encouraged me to do volunteer work in the community, and I didn’t have the stomach to do the old-age home, like most of my friends,” Lantsman told JNS. “I shudder at the sight of blood or sick people.”  Lantsman has no trouble with the sick and bleeding in Gaza – presumably because they don’t qualify as people in her view.

When asked how many children would have to die in Gaza before she would reconsider her support for Israel, Lantsman chose not to respond.  But the number is now over 20000 children and Lantsman could not bring herself to take a few minutes and a few steps from her office to remember those murdered children by saying their names aloud.
